Z is for Zzzzzz!

Sleep is important for mother and baby, although in the early months it might be rare! Your baby has been used to a dark place for nine months so will not understand the difference between night and day. This may adjust naturally, or you may need to try and limit daytime naps gradually. A regular night routine of say a bath, story or calming routine helps your baby learn how to settle more easily and helps create a pattern for the future. Do not place the cot or bed next to a radiator as this can cause overheating. Place baby in the cot on their back with their feet to the foot of the cot and with the blankets no higher than their armpits. Adopting these safe-sleeping practices has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Remember that it is not recommended you give your baby a pillow until they are at least 12 months old.
